Mount Sibayak Sunrise Hike – Start from Berastagi or Medan City

Hiking Mount Sibayak is one of the most popular and rewarding activities in Berastagi, North Sumatera. The hike is moderate and beginner-friendly, usually taking 1.5 – 2 hours to reach the summit from the starting point near Semangat Gunung village. Along the trail, you’ll walk through lush forests, rocky paths, and sulfur fields near the crater, where you can hear hissing steam and smell volcanic gases.

If the the travellers stay in Medan, pickup will be at 2:00 AM. At the foot of Mount Sibayak, several natural hot springs (called pemandian air panas) offer the perfect way to relax after your hike. The warm, mineral-rich water is believed to have healing properties and provides a soothing experience after hours of trekking. Popular hot spring areas include Lau Sidebuk debuk and Semangat Gunung.

ITINERARY (Start from Medan) :

02:00 AM – Pick-Up from Hotel (Medan) : Begin your adventure early! Our driver will pick you up from your hotel in Medan and take you to the Mount Sibayak trailhead for your sunrise hike.

04:35 AM – Start Hiking Mount Sibayak : Hike under the stars and through the cool mountain air toward the summit of Mount Sibayak (2,212 m). The trail takes about 1.5 hours and passes through forest and volcanic rock paths.

06:00 AM – Sunrise at the Summit : Reach the top just in time to witness an unforgettable sunrise over Berastagi and Mount Sinabung. Enjoy panoramic views, explore the steaming volcanic crater, and take amazing photos of the early morning light over the Karo Highlands.

07:30 AM – Descend the Mountain : Begin your descent, taking in the views along the trail. The hike down takes around 1 hour and ends near the natural hot springs.

08:45 AM – Relax at the Hot Springs : After the hike, enjoy a well-deserved soak at Lau Sidebuk debuk Hot Springs or Semangat Gunung Hot Spring. The warm, sulfur-rich water is perfect for relaxing your muscles and refreshing your body after the morning climb. You can also enjoy coffee or light snacks nearby.

09:30 AM – Depart for Berastagi Fruit Market : Travellers can taste, shop, and experience the authentic charm of a traditional Sumatran highland market.

10:00 AM – Transfer to Medan hotel : End of trip
